Act I - Scene 1: The Town SquareThe curtain rises on the protagonists, Franz and Swanilda who are losl in each other's affection. Just above them on a balcony, Dr. Coppelius appears carrying Coppelia - a life-size doll that he has made. At this point, Franz and Swanilda start to argue - Swanilda accuses Franz of flirting with the village girls and ho denies it, assuring her that she is the only one for him. Swanilda is not convinced and runs off. Coppelius conies down into the square and dances a solo: he is so proud of Coppelia that he wants people to believe that she is human. The villagers arrive and, on noticing Coppelia sitting on the balcony, they wave but she remains motionless. Swanilda returns and dances a pas de deux with Franz… Act I - Scene 2: Coppelius's WorkshopSwanilda is climbing the ladder to the balcony, followed reluctantly and nervously by herfriends. They find themselves in a workshop full of dolls, strange masks and rubber limbs. On close inspection, the girls realise that Coppelia is just a doll like the oilier dolls in the workshop. Among these are dolls who each perform a characteristic dance, much to the amusement of Swanilda and her friends: Chinese doll, Spanish doll, Scottish doll and Nutcracker doll. Panic sets in on hearing Coppelius's footsteps and in their terror the girls dress up in the costumes of the various dolls and hide the naked dummies. Swanilda takes Coppelia's costume… Act II: The Town Square -

In spring 2011, the first-ever performances at New York's Metropolitan Opera of Rossini's Le Comte Ory brought standing ovations and critical-acclaim. The spectacular trio of Juan Diego Florez, Diana Damrau and Joyce DiDonato ignited vocal and theatrical fireworks. Le Comte Ory tells the story of a libidinous and cunning nobleman who disguises himself first as a hermit and then as a nun ("Sister Colette") in order to gain access to the virtuous Countess Adele, whose brother is away at the Crusades. The 2011 Met production was directed by the Tony Award-winning Broadway director Bartlett Sher, who in recent years has also staged Il barbiere di Siviglia and Les Contes d'Hoffman for the Met. Sher presented the action as an opera within an opera, updated the action by a few centuries and giving the costume designer, Catherine Zuber, the opportunity to create some particularly extravagant headgear. Juan Diego Florez starred as the title role while Diana Damrau plays his love interest, Countess Adele, and Joyce DiDonato was in breeches as his pageboy Isolier. The trio had appeared in Sher's production of Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia. The New York Times praised "the terrific cast", citing Damrau's "lustrous, agile coloratura soprano voice, and charisma galore" and describing how DiDonato, "who sang with plush sound and impeccable passagework, sent top notes soaring and conveyed all the swagger of a smitten page." The Financial Times named Florez, "a bel-canto paragon virtually without peer. He attacks and/or floats top tones with laughing ease, phrases with slender grace and exudes charm even when impersonating a singing nun". The Wall Street Journal said: "It was a treat to hear Mr. Florez navigate the vocal extremes of the role, popping out high C's while adopting a rascally but winning demeanor." Conducted with verve and finesse by Rossini specialist Maurizio Benini, the production also features the stylish French baritone Stephane Degout as Ory's bibulous conspirator Raimbaud (quite a change from his previous Met role - Debussy's gentle Pelleas), charismatic Italian bass Michele Pertusi as the Count's long-suffering Tutor, and, formidable as Adele's housekeeper Ragonde, the Swedish dramatic mezzo Susanne Resmark.

Cilea's intoxicating opera is brought to new life on the Royal Opera House stage after a century's absence. Director David mcvicar's interpretation for The Royal Opera of this neglected masterpiece recreates the Comedie-Francaise in its heyday, the early-eighteenth century. As the drama heightens, the lovers - sung by Angela Gheorghiu and Jonas Kaufmann - are irreversibly bound into a melee of passion. The jealousy and revenge that surround them can only lead to heartbreak and tragedy. Content: 01. Opening Titles & Credits 02. Michonnet, Dalla Bianca! 03. Madamigella, Come Vi Chiamerem Stasera? 04.

Dido and Aeneas is the only true opera composed by Henry Purcell, a miniature opera of great musical and dramatic richness. It was supposedly created in 1669 at the girls' boarding school that Josias Priest ran in Chelsea. Virgil's eminently political text, The Aeneid, is based on the exploits of the Trojan hero pursued by the Greeks, destined by the gods to found Rome. Dido, the Phoenician princess who became Queen of Carthage, was but one stage on this glorious journey. The subject of the opera as unfolded in the 17th century is quite different and this is why the scorned woman outshines the man of action. A perfect example of betrayed love, Dido has lent inspiration to a hundred or so operas by Western composers, ranging from Cavalli to Britten. More than any other, this torn character reflects the song from the soul.
